Dry Needling
You may have heard of a treatment called dry needling and wondered what exactly it’s about.
Dry needling is a therapy performed by qualified professionals used to treat myofascial (muscle and fascia) pain. While the name might sound scary, dry needling is safe with minimal discomfort.
Muscles sometimes develop knotted areas called trigger points. These trigger points are sensitive and can be painful to touch.
Thin solid needles are inserted through the skin into the trigger points. The needles are used to stimulate the tissue, thereby reducing inflammation, pain, muscle spam and improving circulation. Dry needling can be used for May neuromusculoskeletal issues, such as back, shoulder, neck, heel and hip pain and is often used with other treatment modalities such as massage, electrotherapy and manipulation.
What is the difference between dry needling and acupuncture?
Sometimes dry needling is confused with acupuncture, they are however not the same. Acupuncture is based on eastern medicine, where similar needles are placed in different parts of the body to unblock energy channels, whilst dry needling is rooted in western medicine and treats specifically muscle tissue.
